People who are generous enough to donate their free time in support of ReportOUT’s work enable us to do so much more, and so our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation.
We have 60+ volunteers at ReportOUT who each bring a range of skills, backgrounds and experiences to our organisation. Our volunteers are truly global, and come from over 40+ countries.


All of our volunteers are dedicated to achieving social change for the human rights, and the development needs, of sexual and gender minorities across the globe. They are committed to helping us to achieve our annual action plan goals.
Our volunteers are based both in the U.K. and internationally. Volunteering at ReportOUT is through virtual volunteering, except for our Events Officers, who need to be based in North East England.

Volunteering at ReportOUT is a professionalised and challenging role and we are after people to stay with us for the long-term, so we can invest in you.
If you can supply 12 hours per month (on average), can dedicate at least 12 months to your role. You should also have strong I.T. software skills and a good wifi connection, are responsive to messages, able to hit deadlines, and are detail focused. Additionally, if you can work autonomously with motivation, and are a strong team player, then we are the chosen family for you.
In return, we will provide you with a volunteering experience in the human rights sector unlike any other. We will invest in you, support you, train you, enable you to be creative and provide your voice to our decision making.
This includes professional training and development rarely seen in any charity, such as research methods and PhotoVoice training, media training, campaigner training, and personality Insights. There may be opportunities to attend, and contribute, to events cited in national and international media. You could also be part of studies cited by the United Nations and national governments. You will gain access to a range of tools to help you be the best you can be. We even have volunteer rewards and awards! You will gain real world experience in a global facing organisation to support your career.

Read our website and the volunteer role descriptor carefully. We expect people to have knowledge of who we are and what the role is about, at the interview stage.
2. Take our suitability quiz - are you what we need?

Then take a suitability quiz below, to see whether you can offer the time that we need, and have the qualities and resources to volunteer with us.
3. Complete your assignment task

Part of our selection process involves a short assignment which must be written by you. This will be also submitted with your application.
4. Complete our online form and prepare your CV

If this all fits, then please apply via our online form (we also assess all your answers to our questions) with your CV, alongside submitting your completed assignment. If any files are missing we cannot accept your application.

If you are selected for interview, we will send you dates and times for the interview. This will be held online via Microsoft Teams only.
6. If successful, the next steps...

If you pass the interview, then we will will offer you an online module to complete before you start using Moodle, as well as a calendar link for an online live induction, held on Microsoft Teams on Saturday March 7th from 12noon until 17:00 (U.K. London time). You will also be given your own Microsoft 365 account which you must use from now on to contact us. This includes a ReportOUT email.

The role descriptors for each role can be read, below. Please read and scrutinise these very carefully, as we have particular skills, experience and abilities that we need for each role. Only apply and go further if you feel that you match the role descriptors and we can see evidence of this on your CV and in your answers on our online form.

Events Officer
Assignment
Aim: The aim of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to plan an event for ReportOUT to host.
Brief: Pick a suitable day of the year for ReportOUT to celebrate or host an event. In no more than one page, plan what this event would be about and write a justification for why ReportOUT should host this event.

Communications Officer
Assignment
Aim: The aim of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to write a suitable social media post for ReportOUT
Brief: Choose a world event related to LGBTQ+ people, and write a suitable social media post for ReportOUT. Consider the length of the post, the tone of it, language used, and how the post should look in terms of visuals.

Global Campaigns Officer
Assignment
Aim: The aim of this assignment is for you to consider how we might map out stakeholders to ensure our research reaches the correct people as part of our campaigning efforts.
Brief: Choose a research project from our website and on no more than one page, make a list of relevant stakeholders to send this research to, giving a justification for each of the stakeholders and why you have chosen them.

Education and Training Officer
Assignment
Aim: The aim of this assignment is for you to consider how we can put together an online course, using Moodle, to teach the public about global LGBTQ+ human rights.
Brief: Design a one page curriculum layout of a potential online course that we can offer at ReportOUT using Moodle, for people to self-study. Add in a course description, session titles and some example activities that people could do, bearing in mind its through a Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle).

Rapid Response Officer
Assignment
Aim: The aim of this assignment is for you to consider how we can react to a global LGBTQ+ news shock item. What should ReportOUT do?
Brief: In no more than one page, design a response that ReportOUT should take in light of a current LGBTQ+ news story (negative or positive) which has just been announced. You may want to consider what ReportOUT should do about this, who we should tell about this, and what else we can do about it.

Human Rights Researcher
Assignment
Aim: The aim of this project is to demonstrate your research and writing skills in creating a short blog suitable for publication on the ReportOUT website.
Brief: Please write and submit a 1,000 – 1,500 word blog in English on a topic of your choosing to do with LGBTQ+ rights anywhere in the world. This could be a focus on a specific country or event, a more thematic study, a personal reflection of your own experiences or anything that you are passionate about! Take a look at the blogs from the current research team on our website to gain an idea of past content.
Please note:

This can be written as an opinion piece or a more objective report, but it must include evidence of secondary research with a minimum of five different pieces if source material cited.

Please cite all sources used in the Harvard format and include a bibliography. Do not use footnotes.

This should be entirely your own work. ReportOUT has zero tolerance for plagiarism, which includes (but is not limited to) use of AI tools to generate supposedly original content and quoting other sources without proper citation.
If your application is successful, we will ask permission to publish your blog on the ReportOUT website during the first half of 2026, under your own name, a pseudonym or anonymously as you prefer.
